Dance is a poem of which every movement is a word and a dancer rises into a different kind of time, a time made visible by dancing.Bharathanatyam is south India's most sophisticated, devotional and classical dance form. Dating back to the rig veda hymns, it's roots lie in the treatise called Natya Sastra, originating in the 2nd century A.D. This dance form was performed in temples as a mode of worship.
Bharathanatyam is a composite art that synthesises all the various elements like Dance,Drama,Music,Poetry,Colour and Rhythm, and conveys a message not merely to the senses and through them to a purely external enjoyment, but it also appeals to the soul of the dancer and the perceiver. It is an art form meant primarily for spiritual expression.
As the name suggests, Bharathanatyam stands for BHA or bhava(mime), RA or raga(scale;melody) and THA or thalam(rhythm), and is based on the carnatic school of music. Although Bharathanatyam is a traditional art form whose essential structure has not changed, it constantly evolves and adapts to new formats in presentation and new concepts in choreography.
